SOUTHERN B. DISTRICT
The Southern B District was separated from the Southern A District in 1966 with 6 parishes, namely Ilemera, Kagoma, Kitaaba, Karambi and the two parishes of Nyabugera and Biharamulo which were so called ’mission areas’ (they now belong to Southern C District). The parishes of Ilemera and Kagoma extend to the Islands of Bumbire and Mazinga. The district has 25000 lutheran christians. The number of christians grows mainly through baptism of children.
Besides the main asphalted road which goes through to Mwanza and Dar-es-Salaam communication with parishioners, especially in rain season is difficult. But we thank God for the invention of mobile phones.
Its inhabitants are mainly peasants who grow bananas, coffee, cassava, maize and groundnuts. The keeping of domestic animals like cows and goats in big numbers began with the immigration of Nyarwanda and Sukuma from neighboring regions and countries. Fishing of small fishes well known in Swahili as dagaa is famous. Endeavors in improving inhabitants’ economy small microfinance groups – SACCOS have been encouraged. The district established Bethania-Obuheleza by which food, accommodation and room for conducting seminars are given to customers/guests at a reasonable price. In the efforts of enhancing education to the community Ilemera Carpentry Centre for Orphans (ICCO) and Muleba Lutheran Vocational Training Centre (MLVTC) which gives intructions on Information Communication Technology (ICT) have been established.
Nevertheless, the district has gone through three main challenges or difficulties it tries to overcome :-
- Poor education. Many pupils (boys)do not go to school but go for fishing. Some parents support that behavior. A poor educated community may lead to poor economical community. The district convinces parents to send their children to school – Education is a reliable inheritance.
- Overwhilmed (kuvamiwa) by pervading (potofu) strong desires of achieving richness which lead to witchcraft and soccery beliefs (ushirikina).
- Incoming cofussing denominations have invaded the area of Southern B by pretending chasing away demons and bad spirits from people as well as giving fortune for richness and bearing of children. Authentic lutheran instructions are strongly insited by the district’s leadership.
The District has international partnerships: Ilemera parish with Adolf-Fredriks parish in Sweden, ICCO with Hunnebostrand parish in Sweden and Southern B with Paderborn district in Germany.
