KUSINI ‘’A’’ DISTRICT OF NORTH WESTERN DIOCESE OF THER EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN TANZANIA.

The district is located on the southern part of the diocese. The Lutheran church mission in the area was found by pastor Samuel Ishebabi in 1922, who was by that time, a ‘’church teacher’’ ( Omwegesa).

As a local chief, Ruhinda had learned the importance of the church and education for his people, granted Ishebabi a ground for a church and school building, and ordered his men to construct it.Then Ruhinda had learned the parents to send their childen to Mr. Samwel I shebabi for secular and catechetical education. In his work, Ishababi was in corporation with the missionaries, who were in Ndolage.

By 1939 he had spread his work to Biirabo, Kishanda, Ngote ( Karambi), the islands of Rubisho and Bumbire, Misikiro ( Katunguru), Kabirizi ( Mushabago) and Muturage ( Nyarugando). In 1932 Ishebabi was ordained a deacon ( shemasi), and so be given more power to work.

In 1938 Ishebabi was ordained a pastor, his missionary area was recognized as ’’ Ihangiro Parish’’ and he was assigned its first Parish Parish in 1939. By then, the parish was composed of 11 congregations as follows,  Rwantege, Biirabo, Kishanda, Misikiro, Ngote, Kabirizi, Muturage, Bihija, Buganguzi, Rubisho and Bumbire islands.

In 1949 the Swedish missionaries came with the idea of centralization of Lutheran missionary work in the region for the better organization. The idea resulted in our church to be in congregations, parishes and Districts, and our District was named ‘’The District of  Ihangiro’’, with 4 parishes, which are Rwantege, Buganguzi, Misikiro and Mushabago. The first District Pastor was Pastor was Pastor Hopf. The later District pastors were, Hegi, Samwel Ishebabi, Gunnar Ljungman, Johannes Orgen, Benetson Olga, Gerhardt Jasper, Hans- Anord Scholten, Josiah Kibira, Leonard Lubago, Christian Lutahakana, Alfred Batunika, Martin Ruburira, Wilson Niwagila, Sylvester Machumu, John Lwenteme, Samson Amosi, Wilson Kyakajumba, Festo Mutashobya, Christian Sindano and Pastor Jackson Lugayana.

By this time the District had been divided into three districts, Kusini A, Kusini B and kusin C and ours is known as Kusini A district, composed of 25,698 congregants, 30 congregants and 6 parishes. The parishes names and their congregations are as follows,

-Rwantege Parish- the congregation is Rwantege

Biirabo- congregations are Biirabo, Bugarama, Kabutaigi, Bwoga, Mushumba and Nyamilamba.

-Buganguzi- congregations are KIshanda, Buganguzi, Buyaga, Kihwela and Ruhija.

Mushabago – congregations are Nyarugando, Kibirizi, Mushabago, Kyanshenge, Omurunazi, Nyarutuntu and Bihija.

-Ihangiro- congregations are Ihangiro, Kashasha Kamishango and Bumpande.

-Rwigembe- congregations are Kishuro, Kalimalimo, Rwigembe, Ngenge, Mishambya, Rwamtukuza, Byengeragee and Kyarutale.

Our work is evangelization through worship services, preaching, Christian education, diaconal works and other church services for our God. We’re successful in our work and the church is growing.

Challenges are neo- Pentecostalism known as’’ born gain’’ movements, due to their rivalries against us, and this is worldwide. We’re confronted with small economy of our congregants, something that affects our efforts to construct needed infrastructure and capacity building to our people, especially needed personnel.

Pastor Lugayana, M. Jackson.
