In the year 2014 the North Western Diocese established the Land Desk. The desk deals with matters associated with land issues. The Diocese came up with this plan after discovering that there are so many conflicts due to the church land grabbing in the community. The land grabbing involves large- scale land acquisition, leasing or buying large pieces by the companies, individuals or government in non transparent manner which resulted law manipulation; the situation caused rampant of land injustice.
Land grabbing has been an issue in many places in Kagera Region where as the religious institutions and local people have been faced that problem. This is largely brought by the politician and rich people for the purpose of attracting outsiders investments.
The church become a victim of land grabbing about 40% of its lands which have been disputed and encroached by either neighbours, Government or politician. The following are some reasons why the lands of church have been encroached: if there is no legal document (Right of Occupancy), open space for long time (lots not been developed), lack of effective use of respective lots, just to mention few. From such situation the desk will make sure improving the status of the church land. Therefore It is land desk obligation to process legal documents for the church land own by the church, create awareness to the church leaders about land justice, document cases where land have been grabbed, and put up a plan of land use.
