 DEAN JACKSON MUSHENDWA THE FIRST BISHOP - ELECT OF THE INTERIM WESTERN DIOCESE OF THE ELCT

The assembly was prepared by the caretaker dioceses of Lushoto (NED), Mwanza (ELVD) and Bukoba (NWD) who were appointed by the national church to take care of this young mission and prepare for it to be one of the dioceses

The Assistant to the Bishop of the NWD, Dean Jackson Mushendwa, was elected the first bishop of the interim Western Diocese, which is based in the Kigoma region.

The last assembly of the former Kigoma young mission area was convened at Kigoma Parish from 19th to 20th of May, 2022. The assembly adopted the constitution for that diocese and elected the Bishop and Assistant to the bishop and Rev. Melkizedeki Hoza the Assistant to the bishop.

Dean Jackson Mushendwa was elected through a third simple majority round after which all three candidates were not able to attain two thirds of casted votes.

The names of candidates niminated by the search committee and adopted by the executive council were Rev. Dr. William Kopwe from Lushoto (NED), Rev. Godfrey Walalaze (NED) and Dean Jackson Mushendwa (NWD)

Dean Jackson Mushendwa was born in 1965 in Ruhanga village, Busiiko congregation which was a constitutent of Ndolage parish in the central church district. He holds a master’s degree in ecumenism from Bossey Institute of Ecumenism in Switzerland.

The bishop elect is married to Gravina Babu and they were blessed with their son Jackton Jackson who is currently studying to be a medical doctor.

The hand over in Kigoma will take place on 5th of July. The bishop’s consecration, installation and inauguration of the new diocese will take place on 9th October, 2022

Let us pray for the new diocese, its leaders and church members so that the Lord may grant them courage and strength towards God’s mission.
